Shooting Sports/Wildlife Class Registration is now open!

The Anoka County 4-H Shooting Sports/Wildlife Committee is offering a variety of shooting and wildlife activities for young people grades 3 & up.  These classes offer 4-H'ers the opportunity to learn about wildlife and develop shooting skills.  Some of these activities involve 16 hours of training and are taught by volunteer 4-H leaders who have gone through certification and extensive training.  All activities are both educational and fun. 

4-H members must pre-register in the activity of their choice.  Classes fill quickly, register online ASAP.  Registration for classes is on a first come, first serve basis.  Final deadline to register is December 11, 2017.  Kick-off Night is on January 8 at 7 pm at the Bunker Hills Activities Center.  This is a mandatory meeting when 4-H'ers and their parents receive important information regarding classes.  Those 4-H members who are pre-registered for classes, pay their class fees by December 15, are enrolled in 4-H for the current year, have paid their 4-H dues and attend the January 8 mandatory meeting will have the best chance of getting into the activity they desire.  Class fees are listed below.  There is an additional $10 registration fee per family.

Parental involvement is strongly encouraged in all disciplines.  Please make sure you have completed the 4-H Volunteer Screening process.  Class cannot be held without the help of parents. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Air GunGrades 3+ - Held at the Bunker Hills Archery Building.  Learn about safe gun handling, shooting fundamentals, and range commands.  Join in air rifle shooting, wildlife programs & recreational shooting.  Four classes will be offered this year.  The first two will meet eight consecutive Wednesdays, starting January 10, Air Gun 1 from 6 – 7:30 pm and Air Gun 2 from 8 – 9:30 pmAir Gun 3 & 4 will meet on eight Fridays starting February 2, Air Gun 3 from 6 – 7:30 pm and Air Gun 4 from 8 – 9:30 pm.  All four classes are the same; just offered on different dates and times.
Air Gun 1 & 2 Dates:  January 10, 17, 24, 31, February 7, 14, 21, 28    Cost:  $20
Air Gun 3 & 4 Dates:  February 2, 16, 23, March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 (no session on February 9)    Cost:  $20

Air PistolRequirement: - Must have completed at least 2 years of Air/BB gun and be intending to shoot Air Pistol at the State Shoot.  State Shoot rules will apply.  Taking an Air Pistol class only, will NOT meet the requirements for shooting Air/BB gun at the State Shoot.  If space allows, those that have completed only one year of Air/BB gun will be able to join.  Held at the Bunker Hills Archery Building.  Classes meet 8 consecutive Mondays starting April 2
from 6:30 – 8 pm.
Air Pistol Dates:  April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, May 7, 14, 21    Cost:  $20

ArcheryGrades 3+ - Held at the Bunker Hills Archery Building.  Learn proper techniques for shooting the bow and arrow (16 hours).  Two classes will be offered this year.  All classes are from 7 – 9 pmArchery 1 meets eight consecutive Mondays starting February 5Archery 2 meets eight consecutive Wednesdays starting March 7.  Both classes are the same; just offered on different dates.
Archery 1 Dates:  February 5, 12, 19, 26, March 5, 12, 19, 26    Cost:  $20
Archery 2 Dates:  March 7, 14, 21, 28, April 4, 11, 18, 25    Cost:  $20

.22 RifleRequirement:  Must be in at least 7th grade and have completed one year of air gun.  Learn to shoot target rifles, pistols, scope rifles, and silhouettes.  Shooters will be required to provide their own ammunition.  Instructors will have ammo for sale.  Training is eight weeks beginning Wednesday, May 2 at Beaverbrook Gun Club in East Bethel from 6 – 8:30 pm.
Dates:  May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, June 6, 13, 20 (June 27 make-up date)    Cost:  $20

Shotgun (Trap)Requirement:  Must be in at least 7th grade and have completed one year of air gun.  Learn basics of shotgun and trap shooting.  Shotgun Shooters will be required to provide their own shells and the cost of clay targets will be extra.  Instructors will have ammo for sale.  Classes meet nine consecutive Wednesdays, starting July 11, from 6 pm to dusk at Metro Gun Club in Blaine.
Dates:  July 11, 18, 25, August 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, September 5    Cost:  $10

Black PowderRequirement:  Must be in at least 7th grade and have completed one year of air gun.  Learn basics of muzzleloader rifles and pistols and throwing tomahawks.  Classes meet eight Saturdays, starting April 21, from 8:30 am – noon at the Beaverbrook Gun Club in East Bethel (Dates are subject to change.)
Dates:  April 21, May 5, 19, June 2, 16, July 14, August 4, 18    Cost:  $25

Firearm (Hunter) Safety – Receive a Firearm Safety Certificate upon completion of the course and passing the state test.  To be eligible to receive your Firearm Safety Certificate, you must be 11 years of age or older.  Classes meet eight Thursdays, starting March 1, from 6:30 – 9 pm at the Bunker Hills Activities Center.  Field day is at Beaverbrook.
Dates:  March 1, 8, 15, 22, April 5, 12, 19 (field day), 26 (test day)  (no session on March 29)    Cost:  $10

Trapping Class – Shooting Sports/Wildlife committee and the Minnesota Trappers Association have teamed up to provide an outdoor training and learning session on Trapping.  The session will include actual setting of traps and trapper certification.  Classes meet on three consecutive Tuesdays, starting April 3 from 6:30 – 9 pm with a field day on Saturday, April 21 from 9 am – 4 pm at the Bunker Hills Activities Center.
Dates:  April 3, 10, 17, 21    Cost:  $5

Wildlife Project Bowl – The Project Bowl competition is patterned after the golden-oldie television show "College Bowl", it challenges teams of 3-6 youth on their knowledge of 4-H project areas.  No experience in the project is required….just a desire to learn and have fun!  Practices will be on Tuesdays, starting January 9 from 6:30 – 8 pm at the Bunker Hills Activities Center.
Dates:  January 9, 16, 23, 30, February 6, 13, 20, 27, March 6, 13, 20, 27, April 3

Wildlife Activities – A variety of wildlife sessions will be offered as part of the 4-H shooting sports/wildlife project.  Non-shooting sports members can attend.  This year’s wildlife offerings include:

State Shoot – Each year Anoka County 4-H SSP/WL project members participate in the Minnesota State 4-H Shoot.  Here they have an opportunity to compete with youth from other counties in a variety of shooting activities.
