Results of the 2017-2018 FLL Robotics Season

The youth members of Beltrami County 4-H participated in the High Tech Kids’ Regional Robotics Tournament.  Of the 22 robotics teams from across Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, Kittson, Beltrami, Itasca, Cass counties, and the White Earth Tribal Community participating at the tournament; two of the teams were from Beltrami County 4-H.


Each season, FIRST® LEGO® League teams undertake a two part Challenge based on a real-world topic. This season, teams participated in Hydrodynamics all while operating under the FIRST LEGO League signature set of core values, emphasizing teamwork and good sportsmanship.


THE PROJECT - Teams research and solve real-world problems just like scientists and engineers. This season, teams investigated the hidden (or not so hidden) world of the Human Water Cycle! Each team was asked to:
• Identify a problem that in the way that people find, transport, use, or dispose of water
• Create an innovative solution that addresses their identified problem.
• Share their solution with relevant and/or meaningful audiences.

THE ROBOT GAME -Teams built and programmed an autonomous robot using a LEGO® EV3 MINDSTORMS® kit to solve a set of missions on a playing field. Each mission represents a different concept in trash removal, sorting, processing, recycling, or reduction.

The First Lego League meets the Minnesota State 4-H directive to include STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math) as part of the county programming.  FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international program for 9 to 14 year-old children to get children excited about science and technology – and teach them valuable employment and life skills. Children work alongside adult mentors to design, build, and program autonomous robots and create an innovative solution to a problem as part of their research project. The competition season culminates at high-energy, sports-like tournaments. Like any other organized “sport,” teams create a team identity, go on field trips, and participate in tournaments. In addition, they cultivate life skills such as planning, brainstorming, collaboration, and teamwork, as well as research, presentation and technical skills.
