Silent Auction a Success

As a 4-H member and volunteer we regularly say the 4-H, we pledge ‘Our Hands to Larger Service … for our community…’ Members of the Benton County 4-H program and community carried out this pledge with their actions at the annual silent auction benefit held on Sunday, November 19th.

The Silent Auction is an annual event in which Benton County 4-H raises money for a community member or family that is in need. Recipients are generally in need for medical reasons.  Past recipients include people suffering from cancer, accident victims, and people with other debilitating diseases.

Our 2017 recipient for the 4-H Silent Auction Benefit was Cindy Wilson. Cindy (maiden name Knapek) is 42 years old, married to Wayne with their two children - Emma (14) and Owen (13).  Cindy is a lifelong resident of rural Foley and had been active in 4-H as a child.  Cindy is employed as an RN at the St. Cloud Hospital for the past 23 years.  In June, after a routine mammogram, she was diagnosed with Stage 2 Metastitic Breast Cancer.  She received a lumpectomy in July. She has completed chemotherapy and will complete radiation by Christmas.  Cindy is hoping for a long term good prognosis and is keeping a positive attitude.

This year, the Benton County 4-H Club Green Acres hosted the 4-H Silent Auction.  “Our club was excited to have this opportunity to host the silent auction.” Club Leader Joyce Belanger stated. “We as a club have never done this before so it was great opportunity for our kids. We were honored to join forces with Cindy's family to make this silent auction a huge success.  We were overwhelmed by the number of people who came to support Cindy by making donations and bidding on items.  We are proud to come from such an amazing community.”

On Sunday evening approx. 1000 people filled the event center to bid on close to 300 auction items and raised over $22,000. The auction items were donated by 4-H Clubs, family members, friends, local businesses and community members. The 4-H Silent Auction would not have been possible without the community’s generous donations!

“My heart is completely overwhelmed”, Cindy expressed as she addressed the crowd with her husband standing by her side. “I could never thank all of you for all the love and support you continue to give.”

There were many 4-H volunteers and generous donors that made this event so successful. Benton County 4-H is grateful to Henry’s Banquet & Event Center in Foley for donating the space for everyone to gather. Thank you to all of the Benton County 4-H volunteers who contributed to the event, a special thank you to the Green Acres  4-H club for hosting the event and dedicating their time.

Thank you to everyone who attended the event, donated items, purchased items or helped promote the event. Because of you the event was a success. Thank you for taking time to “pledge your hands to larger service for your community”.
