  • Poultry disease update for commercial and backyard producers
USDA-APHIS has confirmed H5N2 Avian Influenza Virus in commercial turkey flocks in 15 Minnesota counties. The CDC considers the risk to people to be low. Poultry owners should monitor their flocks and report sick or dead birds to the Minnesota Board of Animal Health. Extension has information about biosecurity practices.
  • Nitrogen research on your farm?
Farmers and irrigators, we need your help. Local research results are critical to provide you the best information about nitrogen use efficiency to achieve good yields while protecting water quality. We are now looking for a Dakota County farmer-cooperator who would like to host this on-farm experiment in 2015.
  • New N Recs for Irrigated Sands, Based on Local Research
Revised fertilizer guidelines for corn grown on irrigated sandy soils have been published by University of Minnesota Extension. These new recommendations are locally important because irrigated sands are relatively common in the eastern part of the county, and because local farmers played a key role in developing the new recommendations.
