    4-H clubs: Apply for an AMC 4-H Community Leadership Award

    The Association for Minnesota Counties (AMC) has released the award application for the 2019 AMC 4-H Community Leadership Awards. These awards recognize community leadership projects by a Minnesota 4-H club during the past year. Two 4-H club projects will be selected to receive awards of $500 in recognition for their contributions and service to their communities. Find out if your club meets the award criteria and apply by Jan. 3!

    4-H enrollment ensures that 4-H families receive critical 4-H communications - it is required for 4-H participation and is easy to do. Has your family enrolled yet? If not, please take a few minutes to enroll and/or update your family's information.

    Are you looking for work experience in the youth development field?

    County-based 4-H youth development summer intern positions will soon be available throughout the state of Minnesota. Candidates must have a high school diploma, and at least two years of undergraduate study is preferred. Submit your application by Jan. 4, 2019.

    Volunteers: Join us for the "Keeping Youth Safe" webinar on Dec. 6

    All volunteers who plan and lead activities and events with youth are invited to the “Keeping Youth Safe” webinar on Dec. 6, from 7-8 p.m. This online training will prepare you to plan for safe environments and to work within risk management policies and practices.

    Sign up now for a national 4-H trip!

    Minnesota youth in grades 9-13 are invited to sign up for Citizenship Washington Focus, a national 4-H civic engagement trip for high school youth. The 2019 conference will be held June 22-29 at the National 4-H Conference Center - this is a great opportunity to gain leadership skills and visit Washington, DC! Registration will close on Dec. 10.

    Register now for a regional youth leadership workshop, BLU!

    Registration is now open for the 2019 Building Leadership & Understanding (BLU) regional leadership workshops. BLU is open to youth in grades six and up. Five BLUs will be held at locations across the state – registration deadlines vary by location. Meet youth from across the region and build leadership skills at this event!

    2019 Project Bowl information is now available! Coaches and 4-H'ers (grades 3 - 12+) interested in learning more about the 4-H Project Bowl program should check out the website for dates, locations, rules, references and more! Get ready to learn more about your dairy, general livestock, horse, lama, poultry, rabbit and wildlife projects!

    Engage Cloverbuds in hands-on science with this new curriculum

    Be a 4-H Scientist! is a new curriculum for adults to engage Cloverbuds in hands-on science exploration. It is available via a free download at www.4hpolymers.org. Volunteer training will be offered around the state in 2019.

    Registration for the 2019 Science of Agriculture Challenge is now open! Youth in grades 6 - 12 should register by Friday, Feb. 1. The Science of Agriculture Challenge is a great way to develop communication and problem solving skills and explore careers related to agriculture.

    Livestock Committee Meeting

    Any livestock exhibitor or parent is welcome and encouraged to attend this meeting and participate in these discussions for our Livestock Programs on January 7th, 7 pm at the Government Service Building, Mantorville.

    SE Invitational Project Bowl

    Here’s a chance for you to practice and learn about 4-H Project Bowls. The SE Invitational Project Bowl will be held Saturday, February 16 in Byron. This will be a double-elimination contest following MN 4-H Project Bowl rules (www.extension.umn.edu/youth/mn4-H/events/project-bowl).

    Plan now for winter weather cancellations

    Plan ahead for winter weather cancellations of 4-H programs, activities and outings. Proper plan communication will help to ensure the safety of 4-H members and Minnesota 4-H volunteers during the winter months.

    Utilize the sales tax exemption for purchases appropriately

    Minnesota 4-H is an approved nonprofit organization. This provides 4-H exemption on paying Minnesota sales tax on most purchases. Purchases MUST be paid for directly by a 4-H organization check in order to utilize the sales tax exemption.

    Follow the 4-H policy when generating funds

    Fall is a great time to plan for fundraising activities for 4-H programs to generate dollars to use throughout the year. Utilize the information sheets linked in this article and work with your 4-H program coordinator when you have questions or are seeking advice about carrying out local fundraising efforts.

    Plan and develop your club’s budget

    It’s time for 4-H clubs to develop their annual budgets. Budgets provide a written plan for raising and spending money to accomplish club goals. Sharing budget reports with your club throughout the year is a great way to help all 4-H members understand where and how funds are being used.

    Keep youth safe when participating in 4-H programs

    Now is the time of year to plan for risk and keeping youth safe as they participate in a variety of programs, activities and events. Use our online planning tool and risk management materials to ensure safe and healthy environments for youth and adults participating in 4-H programs and activities.

    These scholarships are available for college-bound 4-H youth

    Two scholarships are being offered for Minnesota 4-H youth pursuing post-secondary studies at accredited colleges and universities. Over $58,000 is awarded annually through a competitive application process.

    Extension Development and Minnesota 4-H are happy to announce the 2018 Helping Hands Grant recipients. Of the 26 applications we received, 18 projects totaling $22,000 were awarded to 4-H clubs from 20 counties across the state.

    Learn about new Livestock Quality Assurance training options for 4-H animal science members

    New in 2018 – 4-H animal science members can participate in one of two options for Livestock Quality Assurance certification training: 1) Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics (LQA&E) training, or 2) Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) training. All youth participating as state fair 4-H livestock exhibitors must complete Livestock Quality Assurance training requirements.

    Would you like to learn how to do a science fair project? Come to a free workshop that will show you how. Find out what makes a good science fair project, based on the scientific method of inquiry. Scientists will work with you in small groups to conduct and gather data for two experiments.
