Recap of 4-H Activities and Events held in March

Project Day participants

4-H Project Day March 18th
Look what you can do in 4-H!  More than 50 youth & adults participated in the 2017 4-H Project Day.  There were six projects sessions:  Faux Calligraphy (Ashleigh Omlid), Seed Starting (JoAnn Kersting), Sewing (Sandy Kaster & Peggy Noll), Cupcake Decorating (Patti Paul), Livestock Grooming & Showing (Lacy Wulfekuhle & Tyler Wulfekuhle) and Building a Pallet Shelf (Doug Ryant, Pat Noll & Joe Swiers).  A HUGE thank you goes to the presenters and to CHS and Taylor Carlson for the help with the pallets, Pat, Gina, Kaden, Marcus & Natalie Noll for bringing 3 lambs, 2 pigs & a rabbit, Jenna Cardinal & FFA for the use of the shop, Kim Kochman and the Mahnomen Public School for the space.
For more information about 4-H, call the Mahnomen County Extension Office at (218) 935-2226 or Google “Mahnomen County 4-H” and check out what opportunities there are for youth grades kindergarten to one year past high school.  Adult willing to share skills and time are ALWAYS needed and very much appreciated!

Festival of Fathers & Families March 11th – Shooting Star Event Center
Youth & families visited the 4-H table, experimented with potato-power and wrote down suggestions for 4-H summer activities/day camps:  fishing, swimming, making fires, hiking, coloring, painting, tapping maple trees, wood carving, growing plants & trees, dino-drawing, biking, sports, music, cats, catching Pokémon & playing were all mentioned.  4-H youth & adult volunteers will be needed to make these ideas a reality.  Which of the activities would you like to see offered?  Call or email the Extension Office and let us know where you can help.

Dance Bash March 19th

During the GOT:VIVA focus groups, youth said they wanted to do things that didn’t cost anything, weren’t graded and were FUN!  So we tried a Dance Bash at the Mahnomen Public School Auditorium on Sunday, March 19th from 4:00-5:30.  21 sixth – twelfth graders (including 5 guys) attended the “Dance Bash” They warmed up to the Macarena and learned dances to the Cupid Shuffle, Cha Cha Slide, Cotton Eye Joe, Thriller, and Footloose.  Thanks to Bailey Swiers for leading the group!

Affirmation Cards March 26th
Five of the girls that attended BLU in Detroit Lakes said we should offer an affirmation card-making day, hoping to provide youth with a fun, free, social activity.  Lindsey Thompson, Mackenzie Lampton, Lizy Reich, Amara Lampton and Laney Swiers lead the group of 21 in card-making on Sunday, March 26th from 3-4:40 pm at the Mahnomen Area Service Center.  Thanks to Kylee for making the flyers for both the Dance Bash & Affirmation Cards!

*Affirmations are proven methods of self-improvement because of their ability to rewire our brains.  Much like exercise, they raise the level of feel-good hormones and push our brains to form new clusters of “positive thought” neurons. *http://www.arlenetaylor.org/brain-care/953-affirmation
