Recap of 4-H Activities/Events in Mahnomen County

The Mahnomen County 4-H Awards & Recognition Banquet was held on Sunday, November 12th at the New Horizon Resort, Waubun.  At 5:30, the event started with 4-H Family Feud.   The Thunderbirds (Logan Kettner, Mackenzie & Amara Lampton, Lizy Reich and Laney & Sady Swiers) took on the Clovers (Kaden, Marcus & Natalie Noll, Bailey & Olivia Halvorson & Bridget Miller).  Both teams put points on the board, but the Clovers couldn’t keep up with the Thunderbirds.  Final score:  Thunderbirds 312 and Clovers 94.   A rematch was suggested and may be conducted at a future gathering.

At 6:00 pm the group of 41 was ready to eat.  The catered, buffet meal included chicken alfredo, hamburger hot dish, mashed potatoes with gravy, corn, bun, salad and a variety of desserts (caramel apple pie and maple coffee cake were two of the options!).  New Horizon Resort provided the meals and space for $9.99 per plate.

At 6:45 sharp the installation ceremony for the 2017-2018 Mahnomen County 4-H Federation officers began.  Daniel Snetsinger, president, Mackenzie Lampton, vice president,  Lizy Reich, treasurer,  Amara Lampton, secretary and Laney Swiers, reporter accepted the responsibilities of being a 4-H Federation officer and received their officer pins.

Each of the new officers helped with the Awards Program.  Daniel Snetsinger called the meeting to order and representatives from the 4EVER 4-H Club led the pledges.  Mackenzie Lampton did a demonstration on Fine Art Techniques that she exhibited for the 2017 Mahnomen County Fair.  Lizy Reich assisted her in the presentation.  Peg Braaten spoke about leadership & presented Lindsey Swiers with the Senior Leadership Award certificate & $50 prize.  The county & state fair exhibitor awards were given out by Gerri Swiers.  At the county fair level, each grand champion ribbon earned a $2.00 bill and each reserve champion ribbon received a $1.00 gold coin. The eight state fair exhibitors:  Jenna Geray, Sady Swiers, Lukas Geray, Amara Lampton, Laney Swiers, Lizy Reich, Mackenzie Lampton & Christopher Braaten were given their $6.00 state fair premium checks.  Jolene Moran gave Ed & Sarah Snetsinger a 4-H Award of Excellence Certificate for their help with the dog program and presented Daniel & Kael Snetsinger with their dog awards.  The screened adult 4-H volunteers were introduced by Amara Lampton and all the officers passed them appreciation gifts “Souper Volunteers Warm  our Hearts!” – 4-H Cream of Volunteer Soup mugs with Lipton Cup*a*Soup, lotion, Chap Ice & a 4-H pin.  The 2017 Herdsmanship Award was passed on to Deaken Beavins from the 2016 award winners:  Mackenzie Lampton & Laney Swiers.  Deaken received a $50 check and certificate.  The Friend of 4-H Award which recognizes a person or organization whose leadership, actions and support contribute to the improvement and promotion of Mahnomen County 4-H was presented to Sue Gruman Kraft for all her support of 4-H & youth achievement in the Mahnomen Pioneer.  Sue Gruman Kraft accepted the award and shared her experience with 4-H growing up and how her club leaders really made a difference in her and her sister’s lives.  A second Friend of 4-H Award was given to Shelly Zimmel who has helped behind the scenes of many events and especially with the 4-H food stand at the fair. 

Mahnomen County 4-H is fortunate to have incredible 4-Hers, volunteers and community support!
