Crop Update

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service November 8th report, topsoil moisture supplies in Minnesota were rated at 1 percent very short, 15 percent short, 79 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated at 3 percent very short, 18 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Recent rains have slowed down harvest for the remaining corn and fall tillage. Minnesota’s corn harvest for grain was 96 percent complete, which is 5 days ahead of the five-year average. 2015 was a great year to grow corn and soybeans in this region of Minnesota.

This past year the McLeod County Corn & Soybean Growers Association and the University of Minnesota Extension in McLeod County teamed up for the McLeod County Corn and Soybean Growers Plots. A corn plot was located southeast of Brownton on the Bob Lindeman farm. The soybean plot was located northeast of Brownton on the Dean Zimmerman farm.

The corn plot located near Brownton had a total of 12 entries and the bushel per acre average was 201 bushels with average moisture of 19.8%. The corn plot was planted on May 6th and harvested October 16th. The bushel median for this plot was 198 bushels and the yield ranged from the highest yield of 222 bushels to the lowest 178 bushels.  The corn plot winner was NorthStar Genetics Viking 102-304 3011A.

The soybean plot located near Brownton had a total of 8 entries and the bushel per acre average was 60 bushels with average moisture of 10.7%.  The soybean plot was planted on April 30th and harvested September 29th.  The bushel median for this plot was 60 bushels and the yield ranged from the highest yield of 66 bushels to the lowest 56 bushels.  The soybean plot winner was Thunder 3619NR2Y.
