Crop Update & County Plot Results

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service November 19th report, topsoil moisture supplies in Minnesota were rated at 0 percent very short, 3 percent short, 85 percent adequate, and 12 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated at 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus. While some farmers were putting away equipment for the season, others were harvesting, baling corn stalks, spreading fertilizer, and working on fall tillage. Minnesota’s corn harvest for grain was 90 percent complete, which is 12 days behind the five-year average. Moisture content of corn being harvested for grain averaged 18 percent.

Thank you to the area businesses for participating in the 2017 McLeod County Corn & Soybean Growers Association plots. One corn and two soybean plots were planted. The corn plot was located southwest of Hutchinson on the Buckentin farm. The Liberty Link soybean plot was located northeast of Brownton on the Dean Zimmerman farm and the Xtend soybean plot was located northeast of Hutchinson on the Starke Farm.  Both the corn and the Liberty Link soybean plot experienced hail damage.

The corn plot located southwest of Hutchinson had a total of 17 entries and the bushel per acre average was 214.4 bushels with average moisture of 18.0%. The corn plot was planted on May 9th and harvested November 2nd. The bushel median for this plot was 218.9 bushels and the yield ranged from the highest yield of 241.3 bushels to the lowest 181.7 bushels.  The corn plot winner was Pioneer P0574AMXT.

The Liberty Link soybean plot located near Brownton had a total of 6 entries and the bushel per acre average was 51.9 bushels with average moisture of 11.5%.  The soybean plot was planted on May 14th and harvested October 19th.  The bushel median for this plot was 52.7 bushels and the yield ranged from the highest yield of 56.3 bushels to the lowest 44.2 bushels.  The Liberty Link soybean plot winner was LG Seeds C1822LL.

The Xtend soybean plot located near Hutchinson had a total of 10 entries and the bushel per acre average was 40.8 bushels with average moisture of 10.0%.  The soybean plot was planted on June 1st and harvested October 20th.  The bushel median for this plot was 40.9 bushels and the yield ranged from the highest yield of 46.3 bushels to the lowest 35.0 bushels.  The Xtend soybean plot winner was Asgrow 20X7.
