Pruning Trees and Shrubs

The late dormant season, after the coldest weather has passed but spring growth has not yet started, is the ideal time to prune your trees and shrubs. For Northwestern Minnesota that is late February to early April, depending on the current weather trends.

The University of Minnesota Extension website has information for trees, shrubs, and fruit trees.

Pruning trees and Shrubs - Information on pruning large established trees, hedges, large or overgrown shrubs, evergreens, and how to start pruning young trees.

Pruning Large Trees - Thinning out versus topping.

Pruning Stone Fruit Trees - Maximize light penetration and maintain healthy fruiting wood by pruning your stone fruit trees correctly.
