    New Arc 4-H Adventure Club

    The Arc Mower County and Mower County 4-H are excited to announce they’ve teamed up to offer a brand new 4-H after-school adventure club at The Arc Mower County!

    4-H Night at the Austin Bruins Game!

    Join us for 4-H Night with the Bruins February 15 beginning at 7:05 PM! Call the Extension Office to reserve your tickets.

    Regional Winter Outing

    Mark your calendars for Friday, December 28 as we attend Winnie the Pooh at the Old Log Theater. More information will follow as we approach this date.

    Little Lock-In

    Mark your calendar for Friday, March 15. The Little Lock-In will be held at Ellis Middle School. Watch for more information on this event!

    Advisory Board Retreat

    The Advisory Board Retreat will be held November 10th at Ironwood Springs. Please join us in planning and setting goals for the 2018-2019 year.

    What are PDCs?

    Project Development Committees (PDC) are developed to provide leadership, oversight, and planning in specific project areas within 4-H. They are typically made up of a combination of older youth and adult leaders. We currently have a livestock committee comprised of all species that meet throughout the year.

    Project Bowl

    Project Bowl season is right around the corner! The second most attended event during the 4-H year is the Project Bowl competition. Patterned after the golden-oldie television show "College Bowl", it challenges teams of 3-6 youth on their knowledge of 4-H project areas: Dairy, Dog, General Livestock, Horse, Poultry, Rabbit and Wildlife.

    Mower County 4-H Shooting Sports and Wildlife Program Updates

    A new shooting sports year is set to begin. Please join us for a variety of activities and training. Permission slips and fees are due to the Extension Office before practice may begin.

    Banquet Wrap-Up

    Mower County 4-H members and volunteers celebrated their success at the annual Recognition Banquet on Monday, October 29. Congratulations to everyone on another great year in the Mower County 4-H program!

    SE Invitational Project Bowl

    Here’s a chance for you to practice and learn about 4-H Project Bowls. The SE Invitational Project Bowl will be held Saturday, February 16 in Byron. This will be a double-elimination contest following MN 4-H Project Bowl rules (

    Registration for the 2019 Science of Agriculture Challenge is now open! Youth in grades 6 - 12 should register by Friday, Feb. 1. The Science of Agriculture Challenge is a great way to develop communication and problem solving skills and explore careers related to agriculture.

    4-H enrollment - it's that time again!

    4-H enrollment is required for 4-H participation and is easy to do. Has your family enrolled yet? If not, please take a few minutes to enroll and/or update your family's information.

    Invigorate your club meetings

    Adult and teen leaders - are you looking for new activities to kick off your club meetings? Check out this new resource on our website to engage your members in problem solving activities! These activities will not only build teamwork and problem solving skills, but will energize your members, setting the stage for productive meetings!

    Plan now for winter weather cancellations

    Plan ahead for winter weather cancellations of 4-H programs, activities and outings. Proper plan communication will help to ensure the safety of 4-H members and Minnesota 4-H volunteers during the winter months.

    Utilize the sales tax exemption for purchases appropriately

    Minnesota 4-H is an approved nonprofit organization. This provides 4-H exemption on paying Minnesota sales tax on most purchases. Purchases MUST be paid for directly by a 4-H organization check in order to utilize the sales tax exemption.

    Follow the 4-H policy when generating funds

    Fall is a great time to plan for fundraising activities for 4-H programs to generate dollars to use throughout the year. Utilize the information sheets linked in this article and work with your 4-H program coordinator when you have questions or are seeking advice about carrying out local fundraising efforts.

    Interim Minnesota 4-H state leader Jennifer Skuza celebrates all the ways youth and adults can take action in 4-H. As the new program year begins, set your intentions for a year full of doing.

    Plan and develop your club’s budget

    It’s time for 4-H clubs to develop their annual budgets. Budgets provide a written plan for raising and spending money to accomplish club goals. Sharing budget reports with your club throughout the year is a great way to help all 4-H members understand where and how funds are being used.

    Keep youth safe when participating in 4-H programs

    Now is the time of year to plan for risk and keeping youth safe as they participate in a variety of programs, activities and events. Use our online planning tool and risk management materials to ensure safe and healthy environments for youth and adults participating in 4-H programs and activities.

    Plan to attend annual volunteer training this fall

    Powerful things happen for youth when they’re in a positive relationship with caring adults. The 2018 annual volunteer training, “4-H Grows Relationships,” will ready youth and adult volunteers to connect to young people in meaningful ways. Dates and locations are planned across the state this fall. Be sure to bring a team of youth and adult volunteers.

    It’s 4-H Record Time!

    4-H records are meant to be a way of reflecting on what you have learned and done in 4-H, and a way to save great memories for the years to come. Records can be found online and typed up, or filled in by hand with copies received from the Extension Office.

    Animal After-School Adventures at the Arc of Mower County

    Join us from some after-school adventures at the Arc of Mower County this fall! These hands-on and interactive lessons will teach youth more about the science of animals and where your food comes from.

    Make sure your club explores these new zoonotic disease and agritourism resources being sent to every county across the state. Then enter your team into a video contest for a chance at winning a Glo-Germ lesson kit for your group - The winning team will have the chance to work with a professional videographer to re-produce their video as a commercial for national distribution!

    These scholarships are available for college-bound 4-H youth

    Two scholarships are being offered for Minnesota 4-H youth pursuing post-secondary studies at accredited colleges and universities. Over $58,000 is awarded annually through a competitive application process.

    Extension Development and Minnesota 4-H are happy to announce the 2018 Helping Hands Grant recipients. Of the 26 applications we received, 18 projects totaling $22,000 were awarded to 4-H clubs from 20 counties across the state.

    Learn about new Livestock Quality Assurance training options for 4-H animal science members

    New in 2018 – 4-H animal science members can participate in one of two options for Livestock Quality Assurance certification training: 1) Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics (LQA&E) training, or 2) Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) training. All youth participating as state fair 4-H livestock exhibitors must complete Livestock Quality Assurance training requirements.
