  • Get scared for a good cause

    The Murray County 4-H Exchange Families are setting up a Haunted House on the fairgrounds as a fundraiser for the Exchange program. Come check it out on Friday and Saturday night, October 28 or 29 and Halloween on the 31st. Friday hours are 6-11 pm, Saturday 6-10 pm and Halloween, 6-9 pm. Cost is only $5.00 per person, groups of 10 or more pay $4 per person, and on October 28 for those attending the Boo Bash & the Haunted House for just $8. per person. Concessions will be available on October 28 ONLY, at the annual Boo Bash dance in the 4-H Building exhibit hall from 8:00 to 11:00 pm. Soda, water, chips and candy will be sold in the dining room.
  • Recognize your Club Secretary & Historian for their contributions

    Did your club secretary or historian do an outstanding job this past year? Were you the club secretary or historian that kept complete minutes and tracked club events throughout this past year? Club secretaries and historians work extremely hard to preserve club membership, record decisions and track history. A special award is presented to those club secretaries or historians that go the extra mile at the annual 4-H awards celebration in November. Secretary books and historian books should be submitted to the Extension Office by October 15 for award consideration.
  • Three for one

    Just three hours, once a month and you can feel good about volunteering! The Escape Youth Center in Slayton is looking for adult volunteers to cover three-hour shifts, once a month, or even less often. The Escape is completely volunteer run and sustains itself through fundraisers and donations. The doors are open to youth fifth grade and older on Saturday nights from 6:30 to 9:30. A pool table, foosball, ping pong, Wii, Xbox and other video games, and lots of table games, puzzles, and computers with internet access are available for the kids. It’s a fun & safe place for kids to hang out with friends, but adult volunteers are needed. Contact the Extension Office if you’d like more info or can volunteer.
  • Thanks for donations!

    Shout out to Bondin Belfast, Cameron, Chandler Hilltoppers, Currie Poco-a-Poco, Prairie Hustlers and Lakers for donating $25 each to the purchase of the Food Stand toaster. Special thanks for the Samuelson family for also donating $25 and applause to the Badger Lake for picking up the rest, with a $237.49 donation! Thank you, thank you, thank you to Judy Bloemendaal and the local Girl Scouts for donating some silverware to the Food Stand! We are in especially need of more forks but will take more silverware donations anytime!
  • Halloween costumes, music and FUN

    Murray County 4-H Ambassadors are hosting the 12th annual Boo Bash on Friday, October 28, 8 to 11 p.m., at the 4-H Building in Slayton. Fifth through ninth graders are invited to this dance that includes several contests. Best male and best female costume awards will be given as well. Concessions will be available. Cost is just $5. For those attending both the Boo Bash and the Haunted House on October 28, just $8 will get you into both the dance & the Haunted House! Murray County 4-H Ambassadors will host the Boo Bash.
  • McAmbies have McFun!

    Murray County 4-H Ambassadors – call themselves McAmbies – know how to have Murray County fun! McAmbies are the leadership team in 4-H that help with various youth activities throughout the year, as well as at county fair events. McAmbies announce and present most of the awards at the annual 4-H awards celebration each fall; help youngsters make crafts at the January ECFE Family Fair, explore science at the Murray County Fair, assist with 4-H Adventures after-school programs as well as the Summer of Fun sessions in June & July, and are key to 4-H shows and events at the county fair in August. McAmbies know how to work hard and know how to have fun! McAmbies meet every month for leadership exercises as well as for social events. If you’re ninth grade or older, consider this unique leadership opportunity and complete an application to join the team. Applications are available at the Extension Office or online. Apps must be returned no later than October 15, 2016.
  • Annual 4-H Club Leadership Supper

    Plan to come to the Leadership Supper on Monday, October 17 at 5:45 pm (prior to the Federation meeting). Supper will be served at no cost. The discussion will include creative ideas to involve more volunteers in sharing the leadership in your club. We’ll share what works for clubs, what challenges face clubs and how we can all MAKE THE BEST BETTER. Club leaders, project leaders, volunteers and club officers are encouraged to attend. Please register by October 10, so we can plan for supper.
  • Officers installed at Federation Meeting

    The October 17 Murray County 4-H Federation meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Courts Building. Agenda items include: installation of newly elected officers, county fair review, state fair delegates report, Livestock Committee elections, budget proposal, and annual fundraiser recommendations. Slayton Shooting Stars 4-H Club will serve cake. Members, parents and volunteers are encouraged to attend. 4-H CASH will continue to be awarded to all who attend – start your cash stash for the 2017 4-H county fair food stand! It will be the final meeting to collect COIN WARS money for our three benefactors – empty your pockets for three great causes!
  • Thanks for serving on the Livestock Committee

    Thank you to Dawn Mouw, Tom Mesner & Gary Bruxvoort for serving on the Murray County 4-H Livestock Committee the past six years. An election will be held at the October 17 Federation meeting to fill one BEEF, one GOAT and one SWINE vacancy. Nominations will be taken from the floor as well as recommendations from the committee.

  • Congrats Fenton Friends, Currie Poco-a-Poco & Bondin Belfast!

    Fenton Friends took first place honors in herdsmanship at the 2016 county fair. Time for a pizza party for their “tidy” efforts! Currie Poco-a-Poco placed second and Bondin Belfast took third place honors. Congratulations!
  • Happy New Year; happy promoting 4-H!

    It’s a new 4-H year; perfect time to promote 4-H! What is your club doing to increase membership? Have you invited a friend or two to join 4-H? Every NEW member will receive a cool 4-H drawstring bag. As the new 4-H year begins, think about how to include neighbors and friends in the BEST youth organization in the world! Wear 4-H T-shirts to promote 4-H National 4-H Week is October 2-8, 2016; a great time to promote 4-H and here is a simple way to do it without spending money or taking extra time! WEAR a 4-H t-shirt to school that week! Every 4-H member should have a green or maroon t-shirt from Murray County Corn & Soybean Growers Association. WEAR one of those or another 4-H shirt. Take it a step further and take a picture (individuals or groups) and then post on your favorite social media site. One act of simply wearing 4-H shirts multiplies into an ad campaign that goes viral! Celebrate 4-H!
