    Message from Jennifer: It’s a new season of doing in 4-H

    Interim Minnesota 4-H state leader Jennifer Skuza celebrates all the ways youth and adults can take action in 4-H. As the new program year begins, set your intentions for a year full of doing.

    Apps for the state horse and dog shows

    The 4-H State Horse Show will be on Sept. 14-17. The 4-H State Dog Show will happen Sept. 22-23. Will you be there? Download the app before you go!

    Plan and develop your club’s budget

    It’s time for 4-H clubs to develop their annual budgets. Budgets provide a written plan for raising and spending money to accomplish club goals. Sharing budget reports with your club throughout the year is a great way to help all 4-H members understand where and how funds are being used.

    Keep youth safe when participating in 4-H programs

    Now is the time of year to plan for risk and keeping youth safe as they participate in a variety of programs, activities and events. Use our online planning tool and risk management materials to ensure safe and healthy environments for youth and adults participating in 4-H programs and activities.

    Plan to attend annual volunteer training this fall

    Powerful things happen for youth when they’re in a positive relationship with caring adults. The 2018 annual volunteer training, “4-H Grows Relationships,” will ready youth and adult volunteers to connect to young people in meaningful ways. Dates and locations are planned across the state this fall. Be sure to bring a team of youth and adult volunteers.

    Create a 4-H video to win a $50 gift card!

    The First Generation Initiative team is excited to announce a video contest to highlight the great work being done by 4-H'ers to recruit and orient folks new to 4-H! Submit your video by Dec. 15 for a chance to win a $50 Visa gift card!

    Nicollet County 4-H Records are due Monday, October 1st

    With the end of our 4-H year quickly approaching, I highly encourage everyone to complete their project records and turn them in for judging. Although they are not mandatory, it is a great opportunity to reflect on your project areas, plan for next year, and practice your record keeping skills! I ask that all records are completed and turned into the Extension Office by Monday, October 1st. If you do not have copies of the project record forms, they can be found under the related links section on this website.

    Time to Start Working on your Club Chartering Documents

    It is time to start working on your Club Chartering Documents. Please work with your club to complete these and have them turned in to the Extension Office no later than Wednesday, October 31st. You will find the chartering application that must be completed in the related links section on this website. The application also lists a variety of documents that must accompany the completed application. Please make sure to read each page carefully!     Apply today to be a youth member on a state fair livestock show committee

    Youth on state fair show committee - apply today to become a youth member on a state fair show committee. This is for youth in grades 9 through one year post high school. Apply by Sept. 15 for a position starting in early October.

    Learn about changes to Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF)

    Registration for Citizenship Washington Focus, a week-long trip to Washington, DC, will open in fall 2018 for the summer 2019 experience. Youth gain civic engagement skills while touring DC with youth from across the US! Complete a short survey to receive a reminder email when registration material is posted.

    Attend SS&W and ATV fall leader certification training

    Fall 2018 SS&W leader certification training materials are now posted! Adults and youth (9th grade and older) are invited to attend this Sept. 29-30 training at the Gopher Campfire Conservation Club in Hutchinson. Be prepared for the new 4-H year with trained volunteers - register by Sept 12!

    In her last article as Minnesota 4-H state leader, Dorothy Freeman encourages all youth, volunteers and families to be fearless in growing true leaders.

    Make sure your club explores these new zoonotic disease and agritourism resources being sent to every county across the state. Then enter your team into a video contest for a chance at winning a Glo-Germ lesson kit for your group - The winning team will have the chance to work with a professional videographer to re-produce their video as a commercial for national distribution!

    These scholarships are available for college-bound 4-H youth

    Two scholarships are being offered for Minnesota 4-H youth pursuing post-secondary studies at accredited colleges and universities. Over $58,000 is awarded annually through a competitive application process.

    Extension Development and Minnesota 4-H are happy to announce the 2018 Helping Hands Grant recipients. Of the 26 applications we received, 18 projects totaling $22,000 were awarded to 4-H clubs from 20 counties across the state.

    Learn about new Livestock Quality Assurance training options for 4-H animal science members

    New in 2018 – 4-H animal science members can participate in one of two options for Livestock Quality Assurance certification training: 1) Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics (LQA&E) training, or 2) Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) training. All youth participating as state fair 4-H livestock exhibitors must complete Livestock Quality Assurance training requirements.

    Mark your calendars for the 2018 AKSARBEN Stock Show!

    The AKSARBEN Stock Show will be held in Grand Island, Neb. Sept. 27-30, 2018. It's open to 4-H members from Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. In it, 4-H youth exhibit livestock, compete in quiz bowl and judging, apply for scholarships and internships to work with the AKSARBEN Stock Show.

    What Are 4-H Project Records?

    Did you know that part of 4-H project work also includes 4-H record keeping? The process of record keeping teaches 4-H members life skills in goal setting, planning, organizing and critical thinking. Various records to use can be found under the 4-H downloads section on this website along with a Guide to Meaningful 4-H Records. Records are to be completed and submitted to the 4-H office the last Friday in September each year. The project records will be evaluated and considered for award recognition.

    This handbook helps answer questions about the 4-H program in general as well as gives the Nicollet County 4-H program highlights and contact information.

    Weather Policy for 4-H Events

    If schools are cancelled or early release, all 4-H events that evening are also cancelled or postponed. Watch for e-mails regarding cancellations or postponements or call the office.
