2017 Nicollet County Farm Family

Krohn’s Named 2017 Nicollet County Farm Family of the Year!

Congratulations to the Krohn Family for being recognized as the 2017 Nicollet County Farm Family of the Year!  The Krohns, which includes Warren & Rachel, their children Brent, Brice, Kelsey (Horn) & Justin and their children Karis and Logan, raise cash crops and hogs near Nicollet, Minnesota.
The current farm, located in Granby township of Nicollet County, was purchased in 1950 by Warren’s parents Melvin and Vivian Krohn.  This site consisted of 160 acres; half of which being tillable ground and the other half used for grazing and haying. Throughout the years, the farm grew to include dairy cows, Holstein steers, sows, finisher hogs, and chickens.  In 1978, the dairy cows were sold and in 1992 Warren and Rachel added Prairieland Pork, a 1200 sow farrowing site and Krohn Pork, four-1000 head hog finishing barns.  In 2012, Prairieland was sold and Brent and Bryce diversified the operation with Granby Pumping & Application (GPA), a custom manure application business.
Outside of the responsibilities of their cash crop and hog operations, the Krohn’’s are also quite involved in the community; Warren, Rachel and their children donate time and service to local groups like the Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School, Trinity Lutheran Church and Nicollet County Pork Producers Association.
Representing agricultural achievement in diverse farming operations, 70 families from throughout Minnesota are being honored as a 2017 Farm Family of the Year by the University of Minnesota.
The Krohns will be recognized in ceremonies beginning at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 3rd, at the annual Minnesota Farmfest on the Gilfillan Estate near Redwood Falls. They will also be recognized on Friday, August 11th at the Nicollet County Fair at 1pm in Johnson Hall.
The annual farm family recipient is chosen locally by a group of past Farm Family of the Year recipients and is based on their demonstrated commitment to enhancing and supporting agriculture and community involvement.
“The farm families receiving this year’s honors exemplify what makes Minnesota agriculture strong. They bring innovation, science and hard work to farming. They care greatly about the land and animals and delivering quality products to consumers worldwide,” said Bev Durgan, Dean of Extension. “The University of Minnesota takes great pride in honoring these families.”
