    Message from Dorothy: Be fearlessly committed to growing more true leaders

    In her last article as Minnesota 4-H state leader, Dorothy Freeman encourages all youth, volunteers and families to be fearless in growing true leaders.

    Nominate a 4-H volunteer for Salute to Excellence

    Volunteers give much to the Minnesota 4-H program! Consider nominating an outstanding volunteer for a 2019 4-H Salute to Excellence Award. All nomination materials are due by Sept. 15, 2018.

    Plan to attend annual volunteer training this fall

    Powerful things happen for youth when they’re in a positive relationship with caring adults. The 2018 annual volunteer training, “4-H Grows Relationships,” will ready youth and adult volunteers to connect to young people in meaningful ways. Watch for dates and locations across the state this fall and plan to bring a team of youth and adult volunteers.

    Card games, board games, and hands-on learning...Oh my!

    Make sure your club explores these new zoonotic disease and agritourism resources being sent to every county across the state. Then enter your team into a video contest for a chance at winning a Glo-Germ lesson kit for your group - The winning team will have the chance to work with a professional videographer to re-produce their video as a commercial for national distribution!

    Remember livestock demonstration opportunities

    Again in 2018 the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association will be providing $30 cash awards to all 4-H members who complete a livestock demonstration during 4-H livestock weekend at the Minnesota State Fair. Start planning your livestock demonstration today!

    These scholarships are available for college-bound 4-H youth

    Two scholarships are being offered for Minnesota 4-H youth pursuing post-secondary studies at accredited colleges and universities. Over $58,000 is awarded annually through a competitive application process.

    Ambie Meeting

    Our next Ambie meeting is going to be on Tuesday, July 10. We will be meeting at the foodstand at the fairgrounds to paint the south wall! The time is yet to be determined so keep an eye on your email for more information as the date gets closer. If you have any painting supplies (brushes, rollers, etc) please bring them with you!

    Entry Day- NEW!

    Please take note that this year we are only going to have one judging day for our general projects for the Rock County Fair. Monday, July 23rd is when all of the general projects will be judged. Be sure to mark your calendars!!

    Fashion Revue & Presentation Night

    Fashion Revue Judging will take place on Monday, July 9th starting at 12:30 p.m. at the American Reformed Church this year. Presentation night will also take place on July 9th at the American Reformed Church starting at 6:00 p.m. Click the article title to learn more

    Mark That Card!

    Mark That Card! is returning this year at the fair! 4-H’ers and fair goers alike will be given the opportunity to judge four different species – beef, goat, sheep, and swine – throughout the course of the fair. This event is open to all 4-Her’s, not just to those on the Livestock Judging Team. The judging is broken up into four divisions, 4-H Beginner (grades 3-5), 4-H Intermediate (grades 6-8), 4-H Senior (grades 9+), and Open Class. The top judge in each division will be given a prize at the Parade of Champions! However, in order for 4-Her’s to be eligible for the overall prize, they have to judge each of the four species. The official placing of each of the four classes will be determined by the species judge during the show. Judging will begin Wednesday, July 25th after weigh-in.

    Absentee Judging

    It is preferred that projects are conference judged at their designated judging times and days. However, 4-H does have an absentee judging process that applies for events such as a death in the family, a once in a lifetime educational opportunity, optional event with no flexibility (e.g. wedding of immediate family). If this applies to you, please fill out the Google Form by July 18. Click the article title to learn more.

    State Shoot is September 7-9

    Mark your calendar for the state shoot taking place on September 7-9 at the Martin County Fairgrounds/Fairmont Trap Club (1300 North Bixby Rd, Fairmont, MN 56031). Click the article to learn more!

    Youth Leader Trip

    Rock County 4-H is planning a Youth Leader Trip for grades 7-13 at the Blue Mounds State Park! The date will be picked shortly so keep an eye on your email for more details to come!

    Mark your calendars for the MN State Fair General Encampment

    Rock County's State Fair General Encampment will be Sunday, August 26 to Tuesday, August 28. Mark your calendars and start working on your general projects that you hope to earn a State Fair Trip with. Rock County will have a bus traveling to the state fair this year for general encampment. Also, adults, please start thinking about possibly chaperoning for the state fair. If you are not already a screened volunteer, contact the office and we can help you get started with the screening process!

    Extension Development and Minnesota 4-H award eight scholarships

    Congratulations to the 2018 Minnesota 4-H scholarship recipients! These eight outstanding 4-H youth and alumni from across Minnesota stood out among over 100 individuals who submitted applications.

    Many people say that 4-H is all about animals. Is that true? Read why Associate dean and state 4-H director Dorothy Freeman is glad there's a strong connection between animals and Minnesota 4-H.

    Watch out for hoaxes, scams and phishing attempts

    A Minnesota 4-H adult volunteer recently received a phishing email containing club specific information – learn how to spot phishing attempts and follow up appropriately.

    Congratulations to the 2018 Helping Hands Grants Recipients!

    Extension Development and Minnesota 4-H are happy to announce the 2018 Helping Hands Grant recipients. Of the 26 applications we received, 18 projects totaling $22,000 were awarded to 4-H clubs from 20 counties across the state.

    2018 State Arts-In registration is now open!

    All youth currently in grade nine - one year post high school are invited to participate in a 22 day theater arts/leadership/team building experience at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. The 2018 Arts-In experience begins Aug. 9. Register by June 25.

    Sign up for the new 2018 Engineering Design Challenge (formerly Rube Goldberg) state event

    Sign up for the 2018 Engineering Design Challenge! Youth across the state in grades three and up can participate in this fun, team focused STEM based challenge. The event will take place on Monday, Aug. 6 at St. Cloud State University. Sign your team up by June 8 to guarantee a spot at the event. All Level 1 and Level 2 teams are invited to attend!

    Learn about new Livestock Quality Assurance training options for 4-H animal science members

    New in 2018 – 4-H animal science members can participate in one of two options for Livestock Quality Assurance certification training: 1) Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics (LQA&E) training, or 2) Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) training. All youth participating as state fair 4-H livestock exhibitors must complete Livestock Quality Assurance training requirements.

    Don't forget about 2018 Share the Fun!

    This is an early reminder that state fair Share the Fun nominations and application forms will be available online June 1. Interested 4-H youth should start preparing to perform their acts! If your county has a Share the Fun competition at county fair, reserve a place on the rehearsal time schedule any time after June 1.

    University on the Prairie

    Students in the region can have an adventure in science and career exploration at University on the Prairie, which will be held July 24-26 at the Southwest Research & Outreach Center near Lamberton.

    Mark your calendars for the 2018 AKSARBEN Stock Show!

    The AKSARBEN Stock Show will be held in Grand Island, Neb. Sept. 27-30, 2018. It's open to 4-H members from Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. In it, 4-H youth exhibit livestock, compete in quiz bowl and judging, apply for scholarships and internships to work with the AKSARBEN Stock Show.

    Crissy Otting has received the Minnesota 4-H Salute to Excellence Volunteer of the Year Award.

    2018 Communications Contest

    The Rock County Communications contest will be held March 1 in the evening. The deadline to sign up for the contest is February 20. Here is your opportunity to practice those lifelong skills of speaking in front of a group or using writing to communicate. This Communications Contest is open to ALL 4-Her's-including Cloverbuds.
