Carver and Scott County Land Rent Seminars

Determining a fair farm rent agreement is a challenge in today’s economy.  “Farmers have experienced decreasing corn and soybean prices since record high prices in 2012 for corn and 2013 for soybeans and current prices offered for 2018 corn and beans are below what farmers sold their grain for in 2017, when rents were $125 per acre.” says University of Minnesota Extension Educator David Bau. Farm land rental rates are dropping as corn and soybean prices continue in this low price cycle.  In some areas landlord property taxes continue to increase especially in areas where school referendums were passed.  Negotiating a fair rental agreement that satisfies both parties will take some planning and preparation.

Landlords, Farmers, Agri-Business Professionals will learn about the factors affecting land rent at informative meetings being held across Minnesota.  These free meetings are being provided by the University of Minnesota Extension.  David Bau, Extension Educator in Ag Business Management, will present topics including historic and projected farmland rental rate trends, current farm land values and sales, projected 2018 input costs and cash grain prices, along with rate of return to the landlord at current market values which help calculate an affordable rental agreement.

Make plans to attend one of these instructional meetings. Attendees will receive several useful worksheets and factsheets that will help to determine what is an acceptable 2018 farm land rental rate.
