Mission to Mars!

On Mondays at Stowe Elementary 4-H has been leading a STEM program teaching 2nd through 5th graders about space exploration and planetary science. The unit was titled “Mission to Mars” and began with learning about the different parts and motions of our solar system. It then moved into learning about Mars, in particular; rockets, space travel, and the challenges of landing and living on another planet. The capstone event was getting to explore “Mars” by designing their own space suits and going out on the “surface” to collect mineral samples and then bringing them back into the lander to examine. Afterwards they enjoyed a small meal of freeze dried astronaut food. Altogether, 21 youth participated in the program over the two months.
