Science on Deck!

STEM Field Trip

Everyone agrees: STEM learning (science, technology, engineering and math) is critical for youth in the 21st Century. That is why South St. Louis County 4-H partnered with UMD to offer an awesome STEM learning opportunity to youth of all ages. On Friday May 26th youth and adults met at the Great Lakes Aquarium to learn about UMD’s research efforts on the Great Lakes.

The Large Lakes Observatory hosts “Science On Deck” events on the research vessel (R/V) Blue Heron. The Blue Heron is part of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) and is chartered by research scientists to explore any of the Great Lakes. Tours are provided by scientists, crew and students to provide an overview of the R/V Blue Heron's layout and research capabilities.

We had a great time and we learned about all the research that the University does on Lake Superior, how life on the research boat is, how to survive in the water and their cool underwater robot!
