    Message from Dorothy: Be fearlessly committed to growing more true leaders

    In her last article as Minnesota 4-H state leader, Dorothy Freeman encourages all youth, volunteers and families to be fearless in growing true leaders.

    Nominate a 4-H volunteer for Salute to Excellence

    Volunteers give much to the Minnesota 4-H program! Consider nominating an outstanding volunteer for a 2019 4-H Salute to Excellence Award. All nomination materials are due by Sept. 15, 2018.

    Plan to attend annual volunteer training this fall

    Powerful things happen for youth when they’re in a positive relationship with caring adults. The 2018 annual volunteer training, “4-H Grows Relationships,” will ready youth and adult volunteers to connect to young people in meaningful ways. Watch for dates and locations across the state this fall and plan to bring a team of youth and adult volunteers.

    Card games, board games, and hands-on learning...Oh my!

    Make sure your club explores these new zoonotic disease and agritourism resources being sent to every county across the state. Then enter your team into a video contest for a chance at winning a Glo-Germ lesson kit for your group - The winning team will have the chance to work with a professional videographer to re-produce their video as a commercial for national distribution!

    Remember livestock demonstration opportunities

    Again in 2018 the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association will be providing $30 cash awards to all 4-H members who complete a livestock demonstration during 4-H livestock weekend at the Minnesota State Fair. Start planning your livestock demonstration today!

    These scholarships are available for college-bound 4-H youth

    Two scholarships are being offered for Minnesota 4-H youth pursuing post-secondary studies at accredited colleges and universities. Over $58,000 is awarded annually through a competitive application process.

    County Fair 101

    Monday, July 23 starting at 6:00 pm with a light supper and program starting at 6:30 at the Steele County Community Center. This will be a informational meeting to help answer questions about the County Fair.

    July 4-H Day Camps

    We are offering 2 day camps for 4-H'ers in grades 3 to 6. Friday, July 20th - A Day at the Beach 9 to 3 at Mineral Springs Park Friday, July 27th - Under the Big Top - Circus Day Camp 9 to 3 at Mineral Springs Park

    2018 County Fair Registration

    Its that time of the year that Fair Registration is open! "Fairentry" is open from June 18 to July 16 to register for the Steele County Fair 4-H projects. The Steele County Fair starts on Monday, August 13th and ends Sunday, August 19th.

    Extension Development and Minnesota 4-H award eight scholarships

    Congratulations to the 2018 Minnesota 4-H scholarship recipients! These eight outstanding 4-H youth and alumni from across Minnesota stood out among over 100 individuals who submitted applications.

    2018 4-H Summer Project Workshops

    2018 4-H Horse Training

    Horse Training will be held every Monday night at the Steele County Fairgrounds Horse Arena.   Please note the schedule and times for you to be in the arena.  ​5:30 - Warm up  6-6:30 - Cloverbuds (in warm up arena space near barn) 6-7 - Beginner Rider/ Green Horse Arena time 7-8 - Advanced Rider Arena time

    Many people say that 4-H is all about animals. Is that true? Read why Associate dean and state 4-H director Dorothy Freeman is glad there's a strong connection between animals and Minnesota 4-H.

    Watch out for hoaxes, scams and phishing attempts

    A Minnesota 4-H adult volunteer recently received a phishing email containing club specific information – learn how to spot phishing attempts and follow up appropriately.

    Congratulations to the 2018 Helping Hands Grants Recipients!

    Extension Development and Minnesota 4-H are happy to announce the 2018 Helping Hands Grant recipients. Of the 26 applications we received, 18 projects totaling $22,000 were awarded to 4-H clubs from 20 counties across the state.

    2018 State Arts-In registration is now open!

    All youth currently in grade nine - one year post high school are invited to participate in a 22 day theater arts/leadership/team building experience at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. The 2018 Arts-In experience begins Aug. 9. Register by June 25.

    Sign up for the new 2018 Engineering Design Challenge (formerly Rube Goldberg) state event

    Sign up for the 2018 Engineering Design Challenge! Youth across the state in grades three and up can participate in this fun, team focused STEM based challenge. The event will take place on Monday, Aug. 6 at St. Cloud State University. Sign your team up by June 8 to guarantee a spot at the event. All Level 1 and Level 2 teams are invited to attend!

    Learn about new Livestock Quality Assurance training options for 4-H animal science members

    New in 2018 – 4-H animal science members can participate in one of two options for Livestock Quality Assurance certification training: 1) Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics (LQA&E) training, or 2) Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) training. All youth participating as state fair 4-H livestock exhibitors must complete Livestock Quality Assurance training requirements.

    Don't forget about 2018 Share the Fun!

    This is an early reminder that state fair Share the Fun nominations and application forms will be available online June 1. Interested 4-H youth should start preparing to perform their acts! If your county has a Share the Fun competition at county fair, reserve a place on the rehearsal time schedule any time after June 1.

    Mark your calendars for the 2018 AKSARBEN Stock Show!

    The AKSARBEN Stock Show will be held in Grand Island, Neb. Sept. 27-30, 2018. It's open to 4-H members from Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. In it, 4-H youth exhibit livestock, compete in quiz bowl and judging, apply for scholarships and internships to work with the AKSARBEN Stock Show.

    Steele County Shooting Sports & Wildlife Program

    A tentative schedule is attached for the 2018 shooting sports program. Archery & BB gun practice starts March 3 and is every Saturday through April starting at 8:30 at the "@0" Rifle & Pistol Club & Straight River Archery Club.
