What UMN Extension has to Offer
Since 1909, Extension has been providing practical, research-based information to improve the lives of people across the state of MN. The University of Minnesota Extension thrives to make a difference by connection community needs and University resources to address critical issues. UMN Extension is most commonly known for the work with youth development through the 4-H program. However, there are six major areas in which Extension generates research, education and outreach. These areas include Environment, Agriculture, Communities, Food, Families and Youth. As the times and information availability have changed, so have Extension’s approach to providing more timely information. The Extension website, social media outlets, and county Extension offices are all available to answer questions and to help address these critical issues.
Recently, the UMN Extension website has been completely updated and made more user-friendly. The website can be found at www.extension.umn.edu. There are a number of difference icons across the top of the Extension webpage to help guide you toward the information you may be looking for. For example, the Agriculture icon would be helpful in searching for information about crops, livestock, food, agricultural business management, and commercial horticulture. Also included on several of the informational pages is a “Connect with …” box which indicates in what ways you can stay connected with that particular topic through social media, blogs and newsletters/ email lists or by phone. Every county in the state of Minnesota has Extension services and online website available.
Due to the growing popularity of social media, Extension has also been providing information through Facebook, Twitter, and even has a YouTube channel. Just a few of the Extension Facebook pages include general Extension, Beef Team, Dairy Extension, Equine Extension Program and Meat Science.
