Support Fellow 4-H'ers

Not that terribly long ago, Wadena was hit by a disastrous tornado that destroyed most of our fairgrounds along with many people’s homes.  With the help of 4-H’ers near and far, we were able to rebuild bigger and better.  I’m sure that you have all been hearing and seeing the terrible aftermath of devastating wildfires that have hit Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, if you or your club would like to support the 4-H families that have fallen victim to these fires, Oklahoma 4-H has been in contact with Minnesota 4-H, so I have some info for you, please see this email from Kevin Allen, Assistant Director and State 4-H Program Leader in Oklahoma:

Once again, the hearts of 4-H members and families from across our state and country have overwhelmed me!  My office has been contacted by several counties and states asking how our 4-H families can assist Oklahoma families affected by the devastating wildfires that occurred in our state (as well as Kansas and Texas).  From Oklahoma 4-H, we are asking donations come in the form of pre-paid gift cards (VISA, Discover, etc.).  As families have lost homes, clothes, fencing, livestock feed, equipment, etc., it is impossible to determine one thing that is needed most by our families.  By using pre-paid gift cards, we can distribute to families so they are able to fulfill their specific needs and begin returning to their normal life.  It would be wonderful to have cards in $50 increments; however, we will gladly accept any generous support!

Donations can be mailed to:
Oklahoma 4-H: Wildfire Relief
205 4-H Youth Development Building
Stillwater OK 74078

As donations are not being submitted to a foundation, we will not be able to issue a tax exemption statement.
Please include with you mailing the number of cards, as well as addresses or emails that we can send a thank you for their support.
Should anyone have questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you have another avenue that you would like to use instead, go right ahead.  For example, two of our great 4-H clubs have been working with the Kansas Livestock Association and will be teaming up to do a couple of fundraisers with the proceeds going to donate feed and fencing materials to farmers and ranchers in Kansas:
The Wadena Juniors & West Jolly Jets 4-H clubs have joined forces to do a series of fundraisers and a joint community pride project.  I encourage you to support their fundraisers and if you feel the call, follow their example and try something for your clubs, too! Here is what they’ve got planned:

  • Little Caesars Pizza Kits: sales must be paid for upon ordering, orders are due by April 13 to Chris Kempenich or Heidi Mattson.  We have a sale flyer in the Extension Office if you’d like to stop by and check it out!
  • Summer Savings Card:  These cards will be sold for $20 each and each card offers over $150 in discounts if all coupons are used! They will be valid from May 1-September 1. The catch is each club only has 50 to sell, so get them while they’re hot!
  • Members from these Wadena Juniors & West Jolly Jets will be bussing tables at the Pizza Ranch here in Wadena on Monday, April 17 from 5-7pm, Pizza Ranch gives them a portion of the profits for that time period if you mention that you want to support the 4-H kids.  This is an easy way to show support just by eating pizza.
  •  They will be hosting a pancake breakfast and bake sale on Saturday, April 22 from 8-11am at the 4-H Building.  The breakfast will offer pancakes, sausage, eggs, orange juice, and milk and the entire event will be a free will offering.
  • Lastly, a savings account has been set up at First National Bank of Menahga and Sebeka if you would like to donate to this worthy cause.  Just let the teller know that you want to deposit in to the Wadena Juniors or West Jolly Jets SAVINGS account.

 If you have any questions about this series of fundraisers, contact Christine Kempenich (218) 639-8851 or Heidi Mattson (218) 639-1760
