Attend Cover Crop and Soil Health Field Day

On April 12th, from 5-8 pm, a field day will be held at the farm of Tom Pyfferoen near Pine Island.  Attendees will learn how Tom has used wheat, cereal rye, turnips, and crimson clover on his no-till corn and soybean farm.

In addition, Tom will discuss how he’s customized a conventional split row planter to no-till seed his cover crops.  Dan Nath (NRCS Soil Scientist) and Dean Thomas (Soil Health Technician) will demonstrate the benefits of cover crops and no-till management through several soil pits.

Attendees will also learn how to do a water infiltration test on their own land.  And, a rainfall simulator will show how differently managed soils impact runoff, infiltration, and water quality.  TJ Kartes (Saddle Butte Ag) will discuss how to manage cover crops while avoiding residual impacts of herbicides.

Tom’s farm is located southwest of Pine Island at 53249 275th Ave, Pine Island, MN.  Pre-registration is not required, but strongly encouraged to aid in planning.  You can register online or by calling Winona County Extension at 507-457-6440. See the flyer for more info and a map of the farm location.

This field day is funded by the MN Environmental and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on MN Resources (LCCMR).
