Wright County Farm Family of the Year for 2016

Russell and Sharon Martie were presented with the award of Farm Family of the Year by the Wright County Board on Tuesday, Mary 24, 2016.  The Marties have been farming in Silver Creek Township since 1972.  They were new to farming when they began but over time they grew their operation to over 250 acres.  In 1982, they started Marties Farm Service in Elk River and have now expanded to three farm stores in total.

Each year the University of Minnesota Extension Services selects a family that is committed to enhancing and supporting agriculture.  The Marties were selected for these reasons as well as for their level of community involvement and family commitments.  They are innovators in Wright County and are currently experimenting with the following:  bio-diesel fuel, sub-surface drip irrigation, aeorgation/fertigation, cover crops, Teff grass and numerous conservation practices including a no-till method of farming.

Join us in congratulating Russell and Sharon!
