Bring Back Purple Martins Workshop

Learn why the population of Purple Martin birds has declined 78 % in the past 40 years and what you can do to help sustain Purple Martins in Minnesota. You can do this at a free Purple Martin workshop on Thursday, March 22nd at 6 p.m. at the Kanabec County Courthouse Basement Room in Mora sponsored by the U of M Extension Kanabec County Master Gardeners. 

Mora High School Science teacher Daryl Lindstrom Jr. will discuss the characteristics of Purple Martins including diet and housing requirements. He will also cover Purple Martin identification, biology, new migration discoveries, history, conservation projects, proper housing, how to attract and manage them.

Lindstrom has a B.S. degree in Biology and Natural Resources Education.  He founded the Purple Martin Recovery Project in 2004. He has managed six Purple Martin colonies for 15 years, fledging over 5,000 Purple Martins and studied this bird in Minnesota for 15 years.  He is a member of the Purple Martin Conservation Association and Purple Martin Working Group of Minnesota.
