Utilize the sales tax exemption for purchases appropriately

The Minnesota Department of Revenue has approved Minnesota 4-H as a nonprofit organization and has provided 4-H an exemption for paying Minnesota sales and use tax under the group GEN number. Contact the program coordinator in your county for information on how to obtain this number. All chartered 4-H clubs/groups across the state will use the same tax exempt number.

Contact the program coordinator in your county to obtain:

  • The sales tax exemption letter which includes the Minnesota tax ID number and describes what items are NOT exempt from sales tax.
  • Certificate of Exemption, Form ST3 which must be completed and provided to each business (seller) where purchases are made.
  • The specific directions on how to complete Form ST3.

The 4-H federation/council, club or group must pay directly for the purchase

  • This means a 4-H organization check must be used to make the payment.
  • Exempt status does not apply if cash, a personal check or a personal credit card is used to make the payment and the payer is then reimbursed by the chartered 4-H federation/council, club or group.
