Introduction

1. Check your software version and upgrade it if necessary
2. Update the definition files
3. Check your settings and scan your system

Step 1: Software version and upgrade

You should have version 4.61.5 of the Command Software AntiVirus (CSAV) installed on your workstation. Check the version of your software:

1. Load the Command AntiVirus (CSAV) software. You can load it from your taskbar by clicking on the Command logo in the lower right corner of your screen:
   
2. Select the HELP menu and choose About Command AntiVirus for Windows.

3. The version number will show in the box (Note: This is a sample image of what will display. Version number and file dates are not necessarily current.):

   

4. If you do NOT have version 4.61.5, you will need to upgrade your software.

Upgrading your Command AntiVirus Software:
1. Close the CSAV software if it is open

2. Click the START button and choose RUN

3. Type NAL in the box and click OK

4. Double-click on the CSAV Current Version icon

5. Follow the prompts and choose UPDATE to install the updated files

6. When the update is complete, it will automatically load the CSAV software

7. Check the version number to be sure it installed properly

Step 2: CSAV Definition File Update

A. Set up Internet settings
1. Load the Command AntiVirus Software

2. Select the Preferences menu and choose Advanced:

   

3. Select the Update Deffiles Now folder tab:

   

4. Remove all the items in the list by selecting an item and clicking the Delete button. Delete all the items.

5. When all items are cleared, click on the Add button

6. Enter these values:
   • Site path: ftp.info.oit.umn.edu/site/site/f-prot
   • Username: fprot
   • Password: pro1282

   

7. Click OK to close both windows


B. Updating your Definition Files

Your definition files will need to be updated frequently. Here's how:

1. Load the Command AntiVirus Software

2. Click the Update Deffiles button:

The program will check to see if you have the most current versions of the definition files. If your files are old, it will automatically update them. You should update your definition files at least once a week to make sure they are current.

Step 3: Check your settings and scan your system

1. Load the Command AntiVirus Software

2. Make sure you have updated to the most current definition files (Step 2B above)

3. Check your settings. Select the Help menu and choose About Command AntiVirus for Windows. The most current version of the program is:
   Version: 95/98/ME v4.61.5
   F-Prot32.exe 2/01/01

4. Click OK

5. Check your default settings to be sure they are properly set up. Click on the Scan Hard Drives Task name and choose Properties:

   

   Note: Properties are specific to each drive, so if you are scanning one of the other drives listed you will have to set the properties for that drive.

6. In the properties screen, be sure the action is set to Disinfect, Select All Hard Drives to scan, Scan Specified Files, Packed files, and ZIP files.

   

7. Click Preferences from the main menu, then click Active Protection. The following should be selected:

   

   • Enable DVP
     
   • Scan floppy drives
     
   • Scan Local Hard Drives
     
   • Scan Network Drives
     
   • Disinfect
     
   • Remove all macros if variant is found

   
   

8. Close CSAV and any open applications

9. Restart your computer

10. Load CSAV and scan your hard drive. Any viruses defined in the updated definition files will be detected.

Other

Any open applications should be closed before performing a scan.

Summary

It is YOUR responsibility to keep both CSAV software and definition files up-to-date on your workstation. Failure to do so can result in loss of time and effort for you and the Minnesota Extension Service.
