Command AntiVirus Software Update Instructions

For Site-Licensed County Extension Offices
Dated 07/19/2001

Introduction

These instructions are for updating the Command Software AntiVirus (CSAV) main program and definition files on a Windows 95/98/ME workstation. Please contact the IT Help Desk at 4-6700 if your workstation is not running one of these operating systems. There are three main steps to updating your AntiVirus software:
  1. Check your software version and upgrade it if necessary
  2. Update the definition files
  3. Check your settings and scan your system

Step 1: Software version and upgrade

You should have version 4.61.5 of the Command Software AntiVirus (CSAV) installed on your workstation. Check the version of your software:

  1. Load the Command AntiVirus (CSAV) software. You can load it from your taskbar by clicking on the Command logo in the lower right corner of your screen:
  2. Select the HELP menu and choose About Command AntiVirus for Windows.

  3. The version number will show in the box (Note: This is a sample image of what will display. Version number and file dates are not necessarily current.):

  4. If you do NOT have version 4.61.2, you will need to upgrade your software.

Upgrading your Command AntiVirus Software (network assumed):

    1. Close the Command AntiVirus software if it is open

    2. Open "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer"

    3. Double click the server drive that contains the current Command Anti-Virus files

    4. Double-click the folder that contains the current Command AntiVirus files - the suggested folder name is CSAV but it may be something else. If you are unsure, check with your office manager.

    5. Double-click file 9x06iec1.exe. (Sometimes an upgrade is distributed as a self-extracting file instead of a self-installing one. For that case, the file to double-click would be: SETUP.EXE.)

    6. Select DEFAULT if this is a new installation, or UPDATE if an earlier version of Command AntiVirus is installed on this workstation

    7. It's a good idea to create the rescue disks when prompted.

    8. When the update is complete, Command AntiVirus software loads automatically

    9. Check the version number to be sure the upgrade installed properly

Step 2: CSAV Definition File Update (assumes workstation has internet access)

The definition files contain virus information. They need to be updated regularly as new viruses are continually being created. The easiest way to keep your definition files current is by using the CSAV software to connect to the Internet and update the files automatically. The Internet settings need to be set up in your software in order for this to work. Internet settings need to be redone whenever the CSAV main program is upgraded.

    A. Set up Internet settings

    1. Load the Command AntiVirus Software

    2. Select the Preferences menu and choose Advanced:

    3. Select the Update Deffiles Now folder tab:

    4. Remove all the items in the list by selecting an item and clicking the Delete button. Delete all the items.

    5. When all items are cleared, click on the Add button

    6. Enter these values:

      • Site path: ftp.info.oit.umn.edu/site/site/f-prot
      • Username: fprot
      • Password: pro1282

    7. Click OK to close both windows

    B. Updating your Definition Files (workstation has internet access)

Your definition files will need to be updated frequently. Here's how:

    1. Load the Command AntiVirus Software

    2. Click the Update Deffiles button:

The program will check to see if you have the most current versions of the definition files. If your files are old, it will automatically update them. You should update your definition files at least once a week to make sure they are current.

B2. Updating Definition Files (workstation does not have internet access)

You'll need to copy file DEFFILES.EXE from server folder \CSAV to this folder on the workstation: \Program Files\Command Software\F-PROT95
The file can be copied by use of "My Computer", "Windows Explorer", or from a floppy diskette if necessary. Once copied, the file needs to be executed to unpack the five files contained within. To execute DEFFILES.EXE:

    1. Open "My Computer" or Windows Explorer"

    2. Double-click folder "Program Files"

    3. Double-click folder "Command Software"

    4. Double-click folder "F-Prot95"

    5. Double-click file "DEFFILES.EXE"

False virus notifications and workstation freezes can occur after definitions files are updated. Command Software recommends that after updating definition files, you restart your system before running a manual scan.

Step 3: Check your settings and scan your system

  1. Load the Command AntiVirus Software

  2. Make sure you have updated to the most current definition files (Step 2B above)

  3. Check your settings. Select the Help menu and choose About Command AntiVirus for Windows. The most current version of the program is:

      Version: 95/98/ME v4.61.5
      F-Prot32.exe 2/01/01

  4. Click OK

  5. Check your default settings to be sure they are properly set up. Click on the Scan Hard Drives Task name and choose Properties:

Note: Properties are specific to each drive, so if you are scanning one of the other drives listed you will have to set the properties for that drive.

  6. In the properties screen, be sure the action is set to Disinfect, Select All Hard Drives to scan, Scan Specified Files, Packed files, and ZIP files.

  7. Click Preferences from the main menu, then click Active Protection. The following should be selected:

    • Enable DVP
    • Scan floppy drives
    • Scan Local Hard Drives
    • Scan Network Drives
    • Disinfect
    • Remove all macros if variant is found

  8. Close CSAV and any open applications

  9. Restart your computer

  10. Load CSAV and scan your hard drive. Any viruses defined in the updated definition files will be detected.

Other

Do not place full confidence in the Dynamic Virus Protection feature. It was not intended to completely replace "scan hard drives" or "scan drive a" tasks. It's good practice to manually scan your hard drive once a week.

Any open applications should be closed before performing a scan.

Summary

Command Software releases program upgrades several times per year. Notice of future upgrades will be announced via e-mail. We will attempt to keep this document updated with the current version number/date. Definition files are updated more frequently, at times more than once per week.

It is YOUR responsibility to keep both CSAV software and definition files up-to-date on your workstation. Failure to do so can result in loss of time and effort for you and the Minnesota Extension Service.

If you have problems or questions about Command AntiVirus software, please contact the Information Technology helpline at 624-6700.
