Extension Retiree EMAIL Policy
logo: U of MN Extension

Updated December 2000

Background: Extension retirees (and others nearing retirement) have expressed interest in getting a dial-up Internet access account so that they can continue to use email and the Web after they retire. Here is what you need to do:

OBTAIN AN INTERNET ACCESS ACCOUNT TO USE EMAIL AND THE WEB:

Tenured Faculty (not P&A) who will be living in the Twin Cities area are eligible to continue using (or establish) a free University of Minnesota Academic and Distributed Computing Services (ADCS) dial-up Internet account. Action Needed: a) Before you retire, contact the department in which you were tenured and ask them to file the appropriate central University of Minnesota HR documents to give you "retired" status at the U of MN (as opposed to "terminated" status); b) If you do not already have the U of MN Internet software disc from ADCS, visit one of their walk-in centers (including 50 Coffey Hall) and pick up a copy of the disc for $6; c) Finally, if you do not know your ADCS user ID and password, you can call the U of MN Email/Internet helpline at 612-626-4276.

Everyone Else (tenured faculty living outside of the Twin Cities, all P&A or other non-tenured academic positions, and staff positions) will need to make their own arrangements for Internet access and email with a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as the U of MN Alumni Association, Rural Connections, Northern Net, QWEST, Earthlink, etc. The Extension IT Team can provide you with some suggestions, if you wish. [Note for tenured faculty living outside the Twin Cities: even though all tenured faculty are eligible for a "free" account, signing up with an ISP with a local dial-in number is much less costly than calling long distance to reach the University of Minnesota ADCS modem pool in the Twin Cities for a "free" account.]

U OF MN EMAIL ADDRESS FORWARDING:

As mentioned above, tenured faculty members can keep their existing email addresses (e.g. ander999@umn.edu). For others, the U of MN email accounts office will forward your email free for a two month period. Contact the central U of MN accounts office just before you separate from the University (send an email message to: accounts@umn.edu). You also also have the option of keeping your account indefinitely by purchasing a year of Internet service from the U of MN Alumni Association.

INTERNET DIAL-UP, EMAIL AND WEB SOFTWARE:

Retirees who sign up with the U of MN ADCS group or an ISP will be supplied Internet dial-up, email and Web software (e.g. POP Mail, Eudora, Microsoft, Netscape, etc.) as part of that service.

DIAL-UP INTERNET, WEB, AND EMAIL TECHNICAL SUPPORT:

Ongoing technical support for the dial-up Internet access will be provided by U of MN ADCS Email/Internet helpline for U of MN accounts; support for private ISPs will be provided by their respective helplines.

If you have any further questions about this policy, please contact the Extension Information Technology helpline at 612-624-6700.
