    Attend spring 2019 SS&W Leader Certification Training

    4-H SS&W Leader Certification Trainings will be held April 6-7 in Isanti County and April 27-28 in Jordan. These trainings are designed for adults and youth that lead or would like to lead training in shooting sports, wildlife, or ATV safety. Deadlines for registering for the trainings are March 22 and April 12. Disciplines fill quickly, so make sure registration forms are sent in early!

    Communicate winter weather cancellation plans

    Review and communicate winter weather cancellation plans of 4-H programs, activities and outings to help ensure the safety of 4-H members and families during the winter months.

    Engineering Design Challenge task announcement

    The 2019 Engineering Design Challenge task and handbook will soon be posted on the Engineering Design Challenge website. While you're waiting, get your team going by working on activities in the Engineering Design Challenge learning guide.

    2019 Regional Camp Counselor Applications

    If you are in 9th grade or above and would like to have an opportunity to utilize your leadership skills this summer, make friends and work with youth...then we need you as a camp counselor!

    2019 4-H Regional Summer Camp

    The Minnesota 4-H Camping program develops leadership and responsibility skills for teen counselors, while providing a safe and fun opportunity for the campers through activities, which allow them to gain knowledge and develop social skills while meeting new friends. 4-H staff and high-school aged camp counselors are prepared and ready to deliver an exciting and safe camp for you!

    Danielle Holmes honored as Minnesota 4-H Volunteer of the Year

    Danielle Holmes of Moorhead has received the 2019 Minnesota 4-H Salute to Excellence Volunteer of the Year Award. The award is given to an individual who has volunteered for 4-H less than ten years and selected from nominees across the state.

    Congratulate Outstanding Lifetime Volunteers from Mower County

    Bob and Laurie Balgeman of Mower County have been chosen as Minnesota’s 4-H Salute to Excellence Outstanding Lifetime Volunteers. The award recognizes volunteers who have spent ten or more years as a 4-H volunteer. They were chosen by a panel of judges from an outstanding list of nominees.

    Keep youth safe during project bowl season

    Project bowl season is underway and before a team practices, a couple of items must be in place to provide a safe and supportive environment for youth and adults. These user guides for club leaders and project leaders will help you verify volunteer and youth enrollment.

    Keep youth safe - participating in winter activities

    Winter activities and outings require planning ahead to avoid risk. Ensure 4-H members and volunteers stay safe by following the “keeping youth safe” guidelines and policies.

    Volunteers are invited to participate in a project bowl coaches training. Join us on a webinar on Tuesday, Jan. 8 from 7 - 8:15 p.m. and learn how to work with a bowl team!

    Join us for the first annual Livestock PDC Networking Workshop!

    Livestock volunteers and youth leaders from across the state are invited to this networking event aimed at enhancing cross-county networks, sharing strategies, improving programming and building relationships. Please join us at the Oliver Kelley Farm in Elk River on Jan. 26. Register by Jan. 18.

    Registration is now open for the 2019 Building Leadership & Understanding (BLU) regional leadership workshops. BLU is open to youth in grades six and up. Five BLUs will be held at locations across the state – registration deadlines vary by location. Meet youth from across the region and build leadership skills at this event!

    Registration for the 2019 Science of Agriculture Challenge is now open! Youth in grades 6 - 12 should register by Friday, Feb. 1. The Science of Agriculture Challenge is a great way to develop communication and problem solving skills and explore careers related to agriculture.

    Engage Cloverbuds in hands-on science with this new curriculum

    Be a 4-H Scientist! is a new curriculum for adults to engage Cloverbuds in hands-on science exploration. It is available via a free download at www.4hpolymers.org. Volunteer training will be offered around the state in 2019.

    4-H clubs: Apply for an AMC 4-H Community Leadership Award

    The Association for Minnesota Counties (AMC) has released the award application for the 2019 AMC 4-H Community Leadership Awards. These awards recognize community leadership projects by a Minnesota 4-H club during the past year. Two 4-H club projects will be selected to receive awards of $500 in recognition for their contributions and service to their communities. Find out if your club meets the award criteria and apply by Jan. 3!

    Complete your 2018-2019 4-H enrollment

    4-H enrollment ensures that 4-H families receive critical 4-H communications - it is required for 4-H participation and is easy to do. Has your family enrolled yet? If not, please take a few minutes to enroll and/or update your family's information.

    Are you looking for work experience in the youth development field?

    County-based 4-H youth development summer intern positions will soon be available throughout the state of Minnesota. Candidates must have a high school diploma, and at least two years of undergraduate study is preferred. Submit your application by Jan. 4, 2019.

    Sign up now for a national 4-H trip!

    Minnesota youth in grades 9-13 are invited to sign up for Citizenship Washington Focus, a national 4-H civic engagement trip for high school youth. The 2019 conference will be held June 22-29 at the National 4-H Conference Center - this is a great opportunity to gain leadership skills and visit Washington, DC! Registration will close on Dec. 10.

    Participate in 2019 Project Bowls

    2019 Project Bowl information is now available! Coaches and 4-H'ers (grades 3 - 12+) interested in learning more about the 4-H Project Bowl program should check out the website for dates, locations, rules, references and more! Get ready to learn more about your dairy, general livestock, horse, lama, poultry, rabbit and wildlife projects!

    SE Invitational Project Bowl

    Here’s a chance for you to practice and learn about 4-H Project Bowls. The SE Invitational Project Bowl will be held Saturday, February 16 in Byron. This will be a double-elimination contest following MN 4-H Project Bowl rules (www.extension.umn.edu/youth/mn4-H/events/project-bowl).

    4-H enrollment - it's that time again!

    4-H enrollment is required for 4-H participation and is easy to do. Has your family enrolled yet? If not, please take a few minutes to enroll and/or update your family's information.

    Invigorate your club meetings

    Adult and teen leaders - are you looking for new activities to kick off your club meetings? Check out this new resource on our website to engage your members in problem solving activities! These activities will not only build teamwork and problem solving skills, but will energize your members, setting the stage for productive meetings!

    Utilize the sales tax exemption for purchases appropriately

    Minnesota 4-H is an approved nonprofit organization. This provides 4-H exemption on paying Minnesota sales tax on most purchases. Purchases MUST be paid for directly by a 4-H organization check in order to utilize the sales tax exemption.

    Follow the 4-H policy when generating funds

    Fall is a great time to plan for fundraising activities for 4-H programs to generate dollars to use throughout the year. Utilize the information sheets linked in this article and work with your 4-H program coordinator when you have questions or are seeking advice about carrying out local fundraising efforts.

    SE Region 4-H Fall Volunteer Leader and Youth Officer Training

    Powerful things happen for youth when they're in a positive relationship with caring adults. The 2018 annual volunteer training, "4-H Grows Relationships," will ready youth and adult volunteers to connect to young people in meaningful ways. Dates and locations are planned across the state this fall. Be sure to bring a team of youth and adult volunteers.

    Plan and develop your club’s budget

    It’s time for 4-H clubs to develop their annual budgets. Budgets provide a written plan for raising and spending money to accomplish club goals. Sharing budget reports with your club throughout the year is a great way to help all 4-H members understand where and how funds are being used.

    Keep youth safe when participating in 4-H programs

    Now is the time of year to plan for risk and keeping youth safe as they participate in a variety of programs, activities and events. Use our online planning tool and risk management materials to ensure safe and healthy environments for youth and adults participating in 4-H programs and activities.

    Would you like to learn how to do a science fair project? Come to a free workshop that will show you how. Find out what makes a good science fair project, based on the scientific method of inquiry. Scientists will work with you in small groups to conduct and gather data for two experiments.

    Reminder - New Fillmore County 4-H Communication Plan

    We will now have a biweekly update that is scheduled to be available through email, Facebook and the web page on the second and forth Wednesday’s of the month, and is in addition to the monthly newsletter. Please read this for county specific information as we are trying to streamline communication so that there are fewer individual emails and information is easier to find in a central location. There is also a calendar available on the website that lists upcoming activities and meetings.
