Plan now for winter weather cancellations

November is an excellent time to develop and implement a winter weather cancellation plan. 4-H programs, activities and outings should be prepared to modify and/or cancel programming as needed.

Consider the following weather conditions when making decisions:

  • The forecasted low temperature.
  • An outdoor wind chill of 20 degrees below Fahrenheit or lower.
  • Total predicted snowfall.
  • The ability to safely operate vehicles (ice, snow and visibility).
  • The schools are cancelled.

Develop and share your cancellation plan with 4-H members and Minnesota 4-H volunteers throughout the winter months so they know how they will be notified.

Consider the following methods:

  • Monthly Clover Update
  • Website
  • Facebook
  • Direct communication to registration lists (calls, texts and emails)
  • Phone trees
  • E-blast messages
  • Local radio/TV stations

Planning now for winter weather and sharing how closings will be communicated will help to ensure the safety and well-being of 4-H members, Minnesota 4-H volunteers and Extension employees throughout the winter months.
