History In the Park – In collaboration with Goodhue County Historical Society (Campers aged K-5)

History in the Park: Games of Yesteryear
Tuesday, July 10, 9 AM – 2 PM, Covered Bridge Park, Zumbrota
Participants will play with games and toys from the last half of the 1800s. They are reproduction toys – made to look and play just as those made 100 to 150 years ago, but were made very recently. In the morning, kids can look forward to running with Hoops and Sticks, playing with Jacob’s Ladders, and twirling a buzz saw. After we have all had a chance to play with the toys, we will attempt to make our own buzz saws to take home after camp. Participants will enjoy an afternoon of playing vintage baseball in its early days. The Goodhue County Historical Society will teach participants the vintage rules with interpretation and facilitate a vintage game of baseball according to the rules of the late 1800s.

History in the Park: Outdoor Adventures
Thursday, July 12, 9 AM – 2 PM, Hok-Si-La, Lake City
The Goodhue County Historical Society, in partnership with Goodhue County 4-H and the Environmental Learning Program at Hok-Si-La Park, will explore the relationship between history and nature. Participants will learn how to put up a tent and start a fire, explore the park’s interpretive center and natural elements during hikes and beach strolls, and create memory books to preserve their past.

History in the Park: Civil War Era

Tuesday, July 17, 9 AM – 2 PM, Rosie’s Park, Goodhue

The Second Minnesota Battery Light Artillery Inc., in cooperation with Goodhue County 4-H and the Goodhue County Historical Society, will participate in the recreation of those years from 1861 – 1865, when the United States of America was involved in the Civil War. The group portrays the 2nd Battery Minnesota Light Artillery which was accepted for service in the Union Army at Fort Snelling in 1862 and served until 1865. Participants will get their hands on history as they rotate through stations. The stations will include an Officers Station in which students will handle artifacts, flags, and more; Laundress Station which showcases women’s roles such as laundress, cook, and nurse; Enlisted Camp Station with discussion of weapons, uniforms, and equipment; Ladies & General Station which features famous personalities including generals, spies, nurses, advocates, and soldiers; Civil War Artillery Station which showcases a full scale M1861 10 Pounder Parrott Rifle with Limber.
